How to read a peptide COA (lab buyer guide)

Clear information for responsible laboratory research.

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the lot-level document a laboratory should file next to a received vial. It is not a brochure, not a product ranking, and not a substitute for incoming checks. Read correctly, it answers: what was tested, by which method, on which lot, against which specification, and with what release status.

This guide is for laboratory buyers and receiving staff. It stays inside research-use-only (RUO) boundaries: no medical advice, no administration guidance, and no claim that a research peptide treats, prevents, or diagnoses any condition. Materials are for legitimate non-clinical laboratory investigation — not human or animal use, compounding, or consumer products.

Trends note: Search interest around “peptide COA” and adjacent “research peptides” queries is periodically polluted with drug-adjacent and weight-loss-adjacent spikes (for example retatrutide-, Melanotan-, and BPC-class terms). This guide ignores that noise on purpose. It stays method- and lot-focused — how to read identity, purity method, specification, and release — not how to shop those query spikes.

What a peptide COA is (and is not)

On Simple Life Sciences’ documentation library (aliased from the COA library), a typical COA includes identity, purity method (for example RP-HPLC), lot identifier, and release status. Related files may include chromatographic records, mass-spectrometry identity support, specifications, and handling statements.

A COA is not a guarantee that every future lot will match last quarter’s screenshot, not a purity slogan detached from method and lot, and not permission to use the material clinically. The library exists so lots can be evaluated and matched. The controlling document is the approved record issued with the specific shipment.

Quality & documentation states the operating rule: approved specifications, analytical methods, and current lot records control each supplied material. Marketing copy never replaces that record.

Identity first: name, catalog reference, and lot

Start at the top of the document, not at the purity line.

Material name. Confirm the name on the COA matches the request and the container. Watch for close variants (modification, salt form, analog vs parent, blend vs single component). A mismatched name is a stop, not a footnote.

Catalog / SKU reference. The COA should be reconcilable to the catalog number used to order. If it cannot, treat it as unmatched.

Lot identifier. This is the join key between vial, invoice, LIMS, and notebook. Two vials of the “same” catalog item are not interchangeable if the lots differ. Always match shipment lot to COA lot. The documentation library is organized around catalog and lot references for that reason.

Date and issuing context. Note test or issue date and any document identifier. A file with no date and no lot is not a lot record; it is an illustration.

If identity cannot be established, purity is irrelevant. You cannot interpret a chromatogram for the wrong molecule.

Purity is a method result, not a slogan

Purity on a peptide COA should be read as: this lot, this method, this reported result, against this specification.

Which method? Reverse-phase HPLC is a common chromatographic method for peptides; the COA should say what was used rather than implying a universal number. Method names and related notes, when present, are part of the result.

What is the reported value attached to? Peak-area percent by HPLC is not the same statement as a mass-balance assay, residual solvent panel, or counter-ion determination. Do not collapse different tests into one headline.

Is there a specification, or only a number? A result without an acceptance criterion cannot be “in spec.” Quality systems treat the technical specification as the thing that identifies the material, test method, acceptance criterion, presentation, storage, and required lot documents.

Does public copy match the lot? If a website headline disagrees with the COA, the COA wins. Public purity language should defer to the lot-specific result and approved method — never invent percentages.

Do not average purities across lots, reuse another lot’s number, or treat “typical” language as the record for the vial in hand.

Chromatographic and mass-spectrometry context

Many peptide lots are supported by more than a single purity figure.

HPLC / chromatographic record. Look for method context and the reported purity for the tested lot. A trace, peak-area table, or method identifier shows the number came from a run. A percentage with no method is incomplete for most laboratory quality groups.

LC-MS / identity support. Mass-spectrometry notes, observed mass, and method comments support identity. They do not, by themselves, establish chromatographic purity. Read identity support and purity as related but distinct statements.

Other listed tests. Some lots include appearance, fill amount, water, residual solvents, or additional panels. Include them in receiving notes only if they are actually on this COA. Do not assume a sister SKU’s panel applies.

The quality page groups these as a release summary, a chromatographic record, and identity support. Know which of those three you have, and which you still need to request.

Presentation, quantity, and handling

A COA often carries information the catalog card compresses.

Confirm presentation matches what you received. File labeled or measured quantity from the lot document rather than substituting catalog pack size. Treat storage notes as laboratory material-care, not use instructions for people or animals. If more than one component is listed, confirm each named component.

If the file is silent on presentation or quantity, ask for the current lot record rather than filling gaps from memory.

Release status and matching the shipment

Release is a decision, not a PDF aesthetic. Look for language that the lot was reviewed and released (or equivalent controlled status), plus enough traceability to archive the file.

Receiving workflow that stays RUO-safe:

  1. Match catalog reference, material name, and lot on vial, packing list, and COA.
  2. Confirm identity and method-stated purity against the lab’s acceptance criteria for this study — not against a marketing headline.
  3. File the COA with the lot in LIMS or the notebook. Do not file a “representative” COA from another lot.
  4. If the current record is missing, request it with product name, SKU, lot, organization, and requested record type, as the documentation library instructs.

Published sample or current-lot files in a library can support vendor evaluation. They do not control a different lot that arrives later.

Pause receiving when lot, identity, or method is missing or mismatched, or when the file is a cropped chromatogram with no header. Request a current record; do not use the material as if it were documented.

Using a COA library without turning it into a catalog
